Other Facilities
Bulk Sugar Terminal
Set up in 1981, the Mauritius Sugar Terminal Corporation has dedicated terminal for the loading of bulk sugar with a quay length of 198 metres and which can accommodate vessels with drafts up to 11 metres. A pneumatic pump is used to load sugar from two storage sheds, each with a storage capacity of 175,000 tonnes, at a rate of 1,450 tonnes per hour.
Cement
The unloading of cement is done by a pneumatic unloader, situated between Quays No. 1 & 2, at an hourly rate of 450 tonnes, into silos of 95,500 tonnes. There are two reception & processing plants, located near the quays, namely Holcim (Mauritius) Ltd. and Lafarge (Mauritius) Cement Ltd.
Wheat
Wheat is discharged in bulk at Quay D by a mobile pneumatic ship unloader and transferred by conveyors to the adjacent storage silos of 40,000 tonnes capacity. The wheat is processed by Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltée.
Fertilizers and Other Products
The Mauritius Chemical and Fertilizer Industry Ltd and Island Fertilizers Ltd. are responsible for the import, processing and distribution of fertilizers.
Storage facilities for 4,600 tonnes of tallow and 1,000 tonnes of caustic soda are also available at Terminal II.
Ship Repairs
Private dry-docking and ships’ repairs facilities at Taylor Smith Group, which can accommodate vessels of up to 100 metres LOA together with a slipway of 30 metres long, are available at Terminal I.
Chantier Naval de l’Océan Indien Ltée (CNOI) another privately owned dry docking facility of 150-metre together with a workshop for ships’ construction and repairs, is operational at Terminal ll.
